Cloud migration has a reputation for being either transformative or a costly mess, and the difference almost always comes down to preparation rather than the cloud provider you choose. Before moving anything, it’s worth answering a few questions honestly.
Why are you actually migrating?
“Everyone else is doing it” isn’t a plan. Good reasons include needing to scale up or down with demand, wanting to cut the cost and effort of maintaining physical servers, improving uptime and disaster recovery, or enabling a distributed team to work from anywhere. Knowing your actual driver shapes every decision that follows, including which provider and architecture make sense.
What needs to move, and in what order
Not everything needs to move at once, and some things may not need to move at all. Map out your applications and data by how critical and how complex they are — low-complexity, low-risk systems are good first candidates, while your most business-critical systems should move once you’ve proven the process works.
Cost is not always lower in the cloud
Cloud infrastructure can absolutely reduce costs, but only if it’s sized and managed correctly. Over-provisioned resources, forgotten test environments, and unmonitored data transfer costs are how “the cloud will save us money” turns into a surprise invoice. Budget for ongoing cost monitoring, not just the migration itself.
Security and compliance don’t migrate automatically
Moving to the cloud shifts some security responsibilities to your provider, but not all of them. Access controls, encryption, backup policies, and compliance requirements (especially if you handle customer payment or health data) need to be explicitly configured — they’re not on by default just because you’re now “in the cloud.”
Test the rollback plan before you need it
Every migration plan should include a clear answer to “what do we do if this goes wrong,” tested before the real migration, not during it.
